MFE in the schools Returns and Expands, Bigger than ever

As the school year shifts into full gear, “MFE in the Schools” begins its seventh year as a successful community based program. This program is designed to address the “mentoring/instructional gap” in music programs by placing seasoned professional musicians in the schools to work alongside teachers and directly with students to provide lessons as well as small and large group ensemble mentorship. Dr. Michael Jamanis Jr. (strings), Rick Ferrarelli (woodwinds), Gentry Stoltzfus (Brass), Frances Miller (Strings), and Matthew Woodson (Percussion) and their team of volunteers will work directly with more than 400 students per week!

We are also excited that the MFE in the Schools Program will continue in the School district of Columbia. This expansion will help bolster Columbia School District’s music program, and allow MFE in the Schools to reach even more students. To learn more visit the MFE WEBSITE.

Music For Everyone Approved to receive funds from the EITC!

MFE has a great opportunity for businesses to both contribute funds to MFE and receive a tax credit at the same time. How you ask? Through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit, also known as the EITC.

This credit allows a business to pledge funds to a non-profit educational organization and deduct 75-90% of that contribution as a tax credit. For example, if your business were to pledge $10,000 for two years to MFE, your business could write off $9,000 of that donation. That’s a $10,000 donation that only costs $1,000! Think about how many instruments we could provide to schools inLancaster County with those funds, all while allowing your business to benefit from a tax credit. If you would like to know more please contact Brendan at MFElancaster@gmail.com.

“Its not good enough to know just math, English, or science. You have to be able to put it all together, and hopefully in a way that no one else has figured out how to do before. Lancaster, PA “Street Piano Capital of the World”

As you have heard, (literally) Keys for the City pianos are still on the streets in downtown Lancaster. And while you’ve heard those pianos, have you also heard that Lancaster is the “Street Piano Capital of the World”? We can make this claim based on several metrics:

  • Consecutive years for the program: We’ve placed pianos on the streets for nine years running, the most consecutive years of any city that we are aware of.
  • Length of program: Our pianos are out for use by the public 24/7 for over four full months. Again, a longer stretch of time than any other city we are aware of.
  • Piano per capita: Lancaster can boast of having one street piano per every 4,237.5 residents (14 pianos for 59,325 people [2013 Census Data])
  • Piano Keys per capita: We can also boast of having one piano key per 48.15 residents!

So, get your groove on and come down to tickle a few ivories on any and all of the 14 pianos. Head to the Keys For The City Website or Music for everyone’s Website for more information regarding locations and additional events around the pianos. You can also follow the pianos on the MFE Facebook page where we will be posting pictures and announcing various events and promotions relating to the pianos all summer long.

MFE Continues to Add “Street Spots” to Music Friday

MFE has been partnering with LOOP and Series 42 to “expand” the amount of music in downtown Lancaster during Music Fridays. Between the 15 “street spots” with busking musicians, the 13 Keys for the City Pianos, and our renewed efforts to encourage bars, restaurants, and galleries to sponsor music, beyond the “Mothership Stage” in Binns park, there will be almost 40 music acts spread throughout downtown. This will further enhance Music Friday and represent another “brick in the wall” in our efforts to assist Lancaster in its development as an “arts destination”.

For our 21 and older friends, there will also be a beer garden returning to Binns Park brought to you by Tellus360.

We’d like to thank our Music Friday lead sponsor – First National Bank.

Year seven of “MFE in the Schools” – Increasing our impact

With the close of the school year upon us, we are happy to announce another successful year for “MFE in the Schools”. This program is designed to address the “mentoring/instructional gap” in school music programs. In short, you can provide each child in a class of 40 with brand new instruments, but if there is only one instructor/mentor for the group, those instruments will never unleash their full educational potential. For the past five years, Mike Jamanis Jr.  and an assortment of high school and college student volunteers have worked in eight SDOL schools, alongside existing music educators providing both group and ensemble instruction. We’ve also been able to underwrite four part-time instructors (Matthew Woodson [Percussion], Gentry Stoltzfus [Brass], Francis Miller [Strings], and Rick Ferrarelli [woodwinds]). Collectively the “music mentors” worked with almost 400 students per week for the entire school year. MFE in the Schools has also provided several public performance opportunities for the children and also arranged for and underwrote several in school music performances by various ensembles. Most notably, several of Millersville University Music Department ensembles performed in SDOL Schools. Additionally, MFE is proud to announce that we have expanded this program to also include the Columbia School District. This expansion is led by music mentor Samantha Schlechter. We are looking forward to expanding this program for the 2018 – 2019 school year.

Open Streets Lancaster

Music For Everyone and the Lancaster Recreation Commission are teaming up for Open Streets Lancaster on May 20th from 11am – 3pm. This event temporarily closes Water Street from Farnum Park to James Street to motorized vehicles on a spring Sunday afternoon so that you can use them for healthy and fun activities. Our Lancaster event joins more than 90 Open Streets initiatives in the United States and Canada.

People traffic replaces car traffic – and the streets become ‘paved parks’ where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can come out and improve their physical and mental health.

Open Streets Lancaster is different than a block party or street fair. It is part of a broad City effort to encourage physical activity, and help people meet, make social connections, and reimagine the City as a place to walk and bike for transportation.

Music For Everyone will be providing music and will have an information table at the event. There you can pick up brand new MFE gear and make percussion instruments to take part in the community percussion circle led by Earth Rhythms.

Music For Everyone Approved to Receive Funds from the EITC

MFE has a great opportunity for businesses to both contribute funds to MFE and receive a tax credit at the same time. How you ask? Through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit or EITC. This credit allows a business to pledge funds to a nonprofit educational organization and deduct 75-90% of that contribution as a tax credit.  For example, if your business were to pledge $10,000 for two years to MFE, the business could write off $9,000 of that donation. That is a $10,000 donation that only costs $1,000. Think about how many instruments we could provide to schools in Lancaster County, while allowing your business to benefit from the tax credit! If you would like more information, please contact Brendan at MFELancaster@gmail.com.

Music For Everyone Invests Over $112,000 in instrument grants!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the awarding of $112,000 in grants to 51 different schools and community organizations. The majority of those grants will be used to purchase instruments. 2018 marks MFE’s the twelfth year of awarding grants. Since 2006, MFE has awarded over $860,000 through this program. We are particularly excited to announce that due to our efforts to “single source” the purchase of instruments, we were able to purchase the value of 112,000 in instruments for a significantly discounted rate. This is a great example of how we becoming more efficient, effective, and strategic with every dollar that we receive.  Stay tuned as we will be holding a HUGE grant give out event in the near future.  Back to the Top!

Biography

Founded by internationally acclaimed Bulgarian singer, director, and composer Tatiana Sarbinska, Orfeia Vocal Ensemble celebrates the rich and varied folk music traditions of Bulgaria and Eastern Europe.

Orfeia draws its name and inspiration from the ancient Thracian myth of Orpheus, a symbol of musical journeys and storytelling. From the motifs of village life to the sacred and spiritual, from the medieval to modern-day adaptations, the musical traditions and culture of the Balkans come alive for audiences through Orfeia’s unique and exciting repertoire.

Representing the Hershey, PA Chapter, we are extremely proud and fortunate to join an already thriving arts community here in the ‘Sweetest Place on Earth’ – and welcome passionate singers from all over central Pennsylvania who strive for musical excellence.

One of nearly 1000 choruses that make up an organization which spans the globe, we recognize the importance of fraternity and brotherhood. Our purpose is to do our part to ‘keep the whole world singing.’

Awards

– 2017 Barbershop Harmony Society 5th Place Bronze Medalists
– 2016 Mid-Atlantic District Chorus Champions
– 2016 Barbershop Harmony Society 8th Place International Finalists
– 2015 Mid-Atlantic District 3rd Place Chorus Finalists
– 2015 M-AD Western Division Chorus Champions

Workshop Description

Bel Canto for the 21st Century

Any choirs today have a tendency to sing harshly, with poor vocal production or poor choices for the instrument. We at Parkside Harmony refer to that style as Can Belto, however we prefer the gentler bel canto approach. Exploring briefly the three mechanisms of the voice, we will then take workshop participants into the practices of proper choices for the voice and how timbre and phonation choices can increase expressive qualities and dynamic range. Members of Parkside harmony will demonstrate the techniques discussed, and audience members will be able to explore the vocal tools for themselves as well. This is a participatory workshop open to all singers of all levels.

Participants will be able to explore their individual voices using the fundamental and advanced vocal techniques discussed and demonstrated. Much of what is learned can be applied directly to one’s own solo or ensemble singing almost immediately.

March is Music in Our Schools Month

An important part of what MFE does is to advocate for the importance of music in our schools. This advocacy role has become increasingly important in this difficult economic environment of decreased educational funding. This, despite the substantial and growing evidence of music’s positive educational benefit in areas such as reading, creativity, language, math, and logic. While we know you value music in schools year round, March is the month we like to make it a point to sing the praises of music as an educational tool. Be sure to LIKE MFE ON FACEBOOK, to see the special “Music in our Schools Month” we will be posting.
