10 Years of Music For Everyone!

This year, Music For Everyone is celebrating its 10th anniversary! Since 2006. MFE has provided grants to local school districts and community centers, held musical events throughout Lancaster, and helped to strengthen the role that music plays in our schools and throughout our communities.

Over the past ten years, providing music grants to local school districts and community arts programs has been the primary focus of MFE, providing over 2,700 instruments to school children in the Lancaster area. In 2016, MFE plans to invest over $90,000 in instrument grants.

One of the most high profile programs MFE has fostered over the last ten years is “Keys for theCity.” Since 2010, local artists and designers have decorated pianos which are then placed in different locations around Lancaster city. The goal of Keys for the City has been to provide access to music, foster creativity and build community. 11187270_10153823747039972_555675299549273941_oMost Lancaster locals can recall a time when they either sat at one of these pianos and played a few chords, or a time when they stood with a crowd of strangers listening to a talented pianist play a few songs on one of the street pianos.

MFE also strives to support local musicians. One such program is the singer-songwriter series at local venue Tellus360. DSC_0190 croppedMFE also brings The Willie Marble Xperience to Tellus360. This blues band rocks out to generate money for a different non-profit organization each month. Other ways MFE has brought musical talent to the city are the MFE Community Chorus and a community ukulele orchestra called Ukulele Uprising. These are just some of the things MFE has accomplished in its first ten years, and the success of these programs is why we celebrate!

The year-long anniversary celebration began January 28 with our 10-Year Anniversary Kick Off Event at The Pressroom Restaurant in downtown Lancaster. Friends and supporters of Music For Everyone filled the front section of The Pressroom, enjoying live piano music and delicious hors d’oeuvres. The Pressroom’s talented mixologists whipped up a signature MFE cocktail, as well. A portion of the cost of each Ivory Punch was donated to MFE, and it was not difficult to convince any of the guests to buy one or two.

At the kick off celebration, Music For Everyone presented a sparkly gold violin to the head of the Lancaster School District. The beautiful piece of art was created by local artist Loryn Spangler-Jones. The violin represented

DSC_0019$1 million worth of community investments in Lancaster County schools and community arts groups to enhance their music programs. The MFE 10-Year Anniversary Piano was also on display at the event. Tree branches of paint trail and bloom across the piano, and guests were able to add thumbprints of paint, representing leaves. The piano will be present at other MFE events throughout the year, and at each event, more thumbprint leaves will be added.

UnGala save the date Front

We plan to keep the 10-year anniversary celebration going throughout 2016. In addition to MFE’s regular events such as Festival of Voices and Music Fridays, the MFE Un-Gala will be held on September 24. The accomplishments of the past ten years are exciting and worth celebrating; the Un-Gala will be the culmination of a year of celebratory events.

MFE’s Singer Songwriter Showcase Returns!

On January 20th, a cold and blustery Wednesday evening, I find myself sitting in the darkened Temple at Tellus360. Sitting on my comfy couch I watch the other patrons file in, paying the $5 cover charge, drinks in hand, eager to enjoy an evening of music by local musicians: Saint Narcissus with Jack Roberts opening.DSC_0024

Jack is an older man, who saunters up on to the stage with only a guitar. I don’t know what to expect but he plays multiple toe tapping songs. It is obvious he is a storyteller who uses his art to share wisdom. Jack has even created his own religion: He believes that we add to the expansion of the universe every time we create. How fitting, that a room full of art appreciators hear this sermon. Some highlights of the set are “A Simple Man with a Simple Plan” and “I’m going tenting with Jesus”.

After a warm opening Saint Narcissus (or Keith Wilson to his friends and family) comes on stage with two guitars and a banjo. He is middle aged, and he has his wife and children with him, which is heart warming. It is also clear that he has had an interesting life; he shares some of his early songs that he wrote in college, speaks of being on tour in Europe with a band, almost completely swearing off music, and how he writes songs for his wife for Christmas. The varying types of instrumentation allow to show a lifetime’s variety of music, which keeps the audience guessing. Wholistically, he used darker tones, comparatively to the upbeat opener, and has very honest lyrics. I enjoyed listening to a wise man’s musings of life.DSC_0031

The best part about this evening is that it is a part of a series of Singer Songwriter nights hosted by Music for Everyone and Tellus 360. Every third Wednesday from now until September there will be artists performing at the Temple at Tellus360 at 7:30. The 4 performers who bring in the largest crowd get to participate in a sing off in October which will benefit MFE. The next Singer Songwriter night  will be  on February 17 and will feature Peter Kinsley. I’m looking forward to another night of good music and good friends.

Here’s the catch: your songs must be performed without any instrumental backing; just you, your voices and a crowd of people just waiting to start singing along!

Don’t be fooled by the communal fun of singing with your fellow patrons, this is a full-fledged battle of the voices with a team of crack celebrity judges waiting to send you back to your seat…or into the next round of competition! The ultimate survivor will receive a champion’s prize pack of Tellus related goodies!
