CaRE – From Surviving to Thriving

What does life look like after surviving cancer? For many it includes fatigue, loss of appetite and strength and financial hardships due to mounting medical expenses. Through the Cancer Rehabilitation Exercise program (CaRE), the Lancaster Family YMCA is providing a pathway for cancer survivors to restore the health and wellness they lost.

CaRE, running in partnership with Penn Medicine – Lancaster General Health, is a fully subsidized twelve-week health and wellness program designed to help cancer patients move past the physical and emotional effects of cancer treatments. In the program, participants meet twice a week at the YMCA for group and individual workouts led by a Y personal coach trained in supporting their special needs. The program incorporates educational components to help cancer survivors develop coping skills, understand proper nutrition and learn fatigue management techniques. CaRE’s supportive environment provides a platform for survivors to share their stories and motivate each other on their journey forward.

Participants for the program are selected by oncologists at LG Health and then evaluated by LG Health physical therapists to ensure they are physically able to participate in the program.
Participants will be expected to participate in at least 80% of the classes.
LG Health augments the program with educational presentations and measures participant outcomes at the completion of the program
The program is free of charge to the cancer patient and a support friend.

About Music For Everyone
————————–————————–————————–
Music For Everyone is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to raising the awareness and resources to strengthen the role that music plays in our schools and communities.Since 2006, MFE has awarded well over $1.0 million in grants, scholarships and direct program support to schools and community arts groups in Lancaster County.
Here’s why we exist:

Music is important to our community.
Research shows that music education helps create strong schools and vibrant communities.
Music programs are in financial trouble.
Despite overwhelming evidence of their value, funding for music programs is being slashed.
Music for Everyone is doing something to help.
Our mission is to cultivate the power of music for education and community building.

Our strategy employs three steps:

1. Consult with education and community leaders to identify and assess needs of school and community based music programs,
2. Raise community awareness of those needs and resources to address them,
3. Strategically invest those resources to effectively and efficiently address those needs.
